Sprinkler Saves Kitchen

A single residential sprinkler is credited as saving thousands of dollars in fire damage! January 11, 1997 started like any other for the Saggu family of Vancouver, B.C., when suddenly, their lives were changed in a flash. A pot was inadvertently left on the stovetop, which quickly caught fire while the family was going about their day. Much to their surprise, the first indication of a fire was the sprinkler alarm activating.

They quickly rushed to inspect the house and found the kitchen with a mist of water extinguishing the flames on the stovetop. A 911 call quickly brought the fire department to the home where the fire was long since extinguished. When the smoke cleared, damage was limited to scorching on the cupboards and ceiling. As for the water damage, the (approximately) 150 gallons the sprinkler discharged was quickly mopped up.

Little damage to kitchen

The family went back to their daily routine. It is interesting to note the home remained occupied after the fire, no loss of production and with the inconvenience kept to a minimum. Due to the sprinklers this fire could be considered to be a minor occurrence.

Had there been NO sprinklers, the outcome of this fire could have been worse including the loss of one's most valued possession.............. human life.
