Sprinkler Douses Fire
Two people are lucky to be alive today... and they owe it all to a $24.50 sprinkler head, and the wisdom of Vancouver City Council who in 1990 made residential sprinklers mandatory in all new homes. Nick and his wife were fast asleep when something went wrong ..... terribly wrong..... something they thought only happened to people in the newspaper.
A fire started in their basement, right beside their new washer and dryer, the flames quickly spread, fuelled by cardboard. Luckily, this fire did not grow to become their worst enemy..... uncontrolled fire. A single residential sprinkler was called upon to quench the flames, which it did gracefully and with style. The automatic alarm soon woke Nick who rushed down to find the smoldering fire. A 911 call quickly brought the fire department to their Devonshire Crescent home.
Nick did not think too much of sprinklers when he bought the home, but would not consider buying another home without them now. How many more needless deaths must there be to convince the policy makers that sprinklers save lives.
